Why Sankalp Exists
Published: 2026-07-17 · Mind · Sankalp
Sankalp exists because the first question a phone asks is not neutral.
The ordinary home screen asks which application the person wants to open.
That sounds practical. It is also a decision about where agency begins.
The person arrives with something to do. The surface answers with a field of icons, badges, recommendations, and interruptions. Each item asks to become the next action. The original intention must survive the surface before the phone can serve it.
Often, it does not.
The Surface Before the Application
Most criticism of manipulative software begins inside an application.
It examines the feed, the notification, the reward loop, the recommendation system, or the metric being optimized. Those mechanisms matter. But they are not the first layer of the problem.
Before any application opens, the phone has already arranged the encounter.
It has placed many possible actions beside one another. It has given commercial claims and deliberate tools the same visual standing. It has made the route to a calculator, a message, a lesson, and an endless feed begin from the same surface.
The grid appears to organize software.
In practice, it organizes competition for attention.
This is why a quieter grid is not enough. Fewer colors, smaller icons, and a calmer theme may reduce noise. They do not change the unit around which the interface is organized.
The unit is still the application.
Sankalp begins from a different unit: the intention.
The Student Arrives With Work to Do
Sankalp begins with students because the contradiction is visible there.
A student may need a phone to read a document, watch an explanation, calculate an answer, speak with a classmate, or receive an urgent message from home. The device is part of the work.
The same device also carries systems built to interrupt, redirect, and prolong use.
The problem cannot be solved honestly by telling the student to remove the phone from life. The useful and the distracting are not held in separate objects. They are held in the same object, often behind adjacent taps.
Nor is the problem solved by treating distraction as a moral failure.
The student is not weak because a surface designed around competing claims succeeds at producing competition. The interface is doing what its arrangement makes likely.
Sankalp does not promise to create discipline on the student’s behalf. It attempts something narrower: to give a considered intention a better place to begin.
From App-First to Intention-First
An intention-first interface asks what the person came to do before presenting everything the device can do.
That change is small enough to describe plainly.
It is also structural.
A Study Field can present the tools the student chose for study without placing every installed application beside them. An Intent Bar can begin with “What are you here to do?” instead of requiring the person to translate a purpose into an app choice. A Commitment can hold a pause the person wrote for a harder moment. A Ledger can record what happened without converting the record into a score.
These are product mechanisms.
The argument beneath them is simpler:
The phone should serve a declared intention before it presents competing possibilities.
This does not mean the phone should infer what matters.
It should not decide that study is more worthy than rest. It should not invent a goal, impose a restriction, or interpret a person’s behavior as evidence of virtue or failure.
Intention-first does not mean system-directed.
It means the person supplies the direction.
Why an App Blocker Is Not the Whole Answer
Blocking can be useful. It can also leave the underlying surface unchanged.
If the phone continues to begin with a marketplace of applications, and a second tool only closes some of the doors, the person still enters through the same architecture. The system remains organized around temptation and denial.
Sankalp is not built around the claim that every difficult application should be prohibited.
It keeps an exit.
The person can reach all applications when they need them. Emergency access must remain immediate. A restriction must come from a rule the person authored. The system may hold the pause, but it may not pretend the pause gives it authority over the person.
The purpose is not to build a stricter phone.
The purpose is to build a phone surface with a different loyalty.
Loyalty Is Also an Economic Question
An interface cannot claim to protect intention while depending on the sale of attention.
If revenue grows when the person stays longer, sees more, or follows paid routing, the product’s stated purpose and its economic purpose will eventually collide.
Good intentions do not remove that collision.
The structure must refuse it.
Sankalp cannot carry advertising, paid placement, or a routing system that serves a commercial partner before it serves the person’s stated preference. A business that depends on those mechanisms would rebuild the same attention marketplace beneath a quieter surface.
This refusal is not separate from product design.
It is part of the interface.
Why Sankalp Belongs to Mind
HomoLLabs places Sankalp in the Mind domain because the product works at the boundary between attention and action.
FORGE begins with one daily commitment and an honest record across days.
Sankalp begins with the surface through which many daily actions now pass.
The products are different. The underlying institutional question is related:
Can technology strengthen a person’s capacity to act without claiming the right to direct that person’s life?
Sankalp is the second product, not a second institution.
It is one practical line of work inside one active domain.
What the Product Must Prove
Sankalp is in development.
The argument is not proof that the mechanism works.
The product must still demonstrate that a student can replace the ordinary home surface with an intention-first one, use it in ordinary life, and find that the arrangement helps without becoming another source of control.
It must show that a self-authored pause can be encountered without shame.
It must show that the useful parts of the phone remain useful.
It must remain honest when Android limits what it can enforce.
It must make leaving possible.
If the product cannot do those things, the language around it does not rescue it.
The work itself has to carry the claim.
That is why Sankalp exists.
